Tuesday, August 2, 2011 - 14:44

The Documentation site exercise suite is a collection of 20 exercises taking you from Drupal beginner to at least a semi-expert. In the exercises, a site for online documentation is built from scratch – covering essential functionality in Drupal core, Views, Flag, Rules and Page manager + Panels. The exercises are copied straight off from the the book Drupal 7 – the Essentials, and exended with demonstration screencasts.

Each exercise will give you:

  • A user story and screenshot explaning what the client wants with this particular feature.
  • "How to demo" steps, assuring you that you have actually built what the client wants (and providing detailed information about the feature).
  • A 2–5 minutes screencast demonstrating the completed setup – or, at least, one way it could look.
  • A suggested solution, described with step-by-step instructions (and references to relevant chapters in Drupal 7 – the Essentials.
  • A 7–15 minutes screencast, demonstrating one way of building the wanted feature.
  • A Feature module with the demonstrated configuration.
  • Links to screencasts demonstrating the involved topics in more details, plus links to related Drupal modules, and other useful links.
  • Any additional comments, with suggested further improvements, pointers to alternative solutions, and more.

Each exercise is built to need a minimum of preparations – usually you only need the two content types created in the first exercises (and also provided as features).

I hope these exercises can be useful for people learning Drupal as well as people teaching Drupal.

Go check out the Documentation site exercise suite! (Right now 13 of 20 exercises published.)

PS: Parts of these exercises will be used in the DrupalCon pre-conference training I'm part of. If you're interested in joining, sign up quick. It was sold out, but today it got extended with five more seats. Yay!
