I know that I should not have been surprised by the total collapse of the Republican party, but I was. What is wrong with you guys? This is not a compromise. This is a surrender! The Democrats must have gone to bed last night with a smile on their faces.
The worst part about all this is that now the judicial filibuster has be legitimized. As I have written here and here, just wait until the Democrats are back in power. When that happens and there is a Democratic President, the Republicans will try to filibuster some of the judicial appointments. At that time the Democrats will simply call into order a session of the Senate and promptly vote to change the rules eliminating the judicial filibuster. The republicans will be outraged and shocked! Meanwhile the MSM will be nodding their heads like some bobble head doll saying, “Yep, the Constitution allows the Senate to make or change their rules by a simple majority. Isn’t democracy great?” Conservatives will yell with all their might, but it will be in vain.
Republicans, you blew it. You blew it big time. If you do not see how this will come back to bite you in the you know what, then you are even more lost than I had feared!
Tom Delay and the rest of the House Republicans need to pick up their pitchforks and torches and head on over to the Senate chamber to knock some sense into the Senate Republicans.
America, you now see who the weak Republicans are, do not vote for them!
Michele Malkin has some of the best coverage on this. Go here:
My two cents: Ditto to all of the above. The GOP parade of pusillanimity marches on. With this pathetic cave-in, the Republicans have sealed their fate as a Majority in Name Only.
Next stop on the trail of capitulation? Driving the final nail in John Bolton’s coffin.
I especially like the Republicans Buckle post.
Now I really am choking on my own rage!
UPDATE: Ace has a good rundown as well, as does Riehl World View.
This would allow the Dems to justifiably invoke their extraordinary circumstances rule based upon not agreeing with the nomination in the first place, claiming a failure of the Executive branch to adhere to their interpretation of the “Advice” clause.
That paragraph moves this from a deal, to codifying a blatant power-reach into the Executive branch’s ability to nominate as it sees fit.
Oh man, are the Republicans going to regret that…
