UPDATE: Viking Pundit has a similar post…posted AFTER mine
His last line agrees with one of the comments I received: satellite radio is the future.
What’s the deal with radio these days? Actually, radio has been in steady decline since I was in high school, some 13 years ago. My God, has it been that long?!?! Anyway, here in WunderTown there is not much choice on the old radio dial. Being in the south, there are at least 4 country stations, which I could care less about. I am reminded of a quote from Blues Brothers:
Elwood: What kind of music do you usually have here?
Bar Owners Wife: Oh, we got both kinds. We got country AND western
Then there is the “Classic Rock” station. Every town has access to one of these P.O.S. stations. Playing the best rock of yesterday and today. Give me a break. They play the same songs over and over again. You get the same three Led Zeppelin songs at least ten times a day. You do know that they released more than three songs don’t you? If you do not have any other songs, I can loan you my CD box set of every album they ever made. Then the new stuff consists of two Pearl Jam songs (are they even still around) and two Alice in Chains songs (isn’t the lead singer dead?). Toss in a the one .38 Special hit, a few Journey songs, a few Lynard Skynyrd songs and the one hit by Three Doors Down and it pretty much sums up their play list.
We had another station that was the “New Rock Alternative” station. I’m sorry, but they need to come up with a better line. Alternative stopped being alternative around 1995 once EVERYONE started listening to it. I guess it is a moot point now. For some inexplicable reason the station changed formats overnight. Now it is just a step up from elevator music.
The one good part of all this is that the Classic Rock station has their “80’s at eight” segment. Growing up in the mid to late 1980’s all the bands that I listened to are now considered “Hair Bands”. There are no stations that play those songs. Well, you will get the occasional Def Leppard or Ratt song played, but other than that, nothing.
I guess I have gotten old. I do not buy many CD’s. I never got the rap/hip-hop thing. Rock today is very boring to me. Oh we are all so sad. Our parents did not love us. Life is hard…..boo-freaking-hoo. Cry me a river. I guess I will just stick with my Led Zeppelin box set, my Pink Floyd CD’s, my Beatles collection, and my Simon and Garfunkel greatest hits.
Yes, that must be it. I have gotten old. I go to the mall and I want to go around slapping all the teenagers that I see. Then I want to go slap their parents. Have you seen what passes for clothes these days on little girls? My God they are whores! But then again, they never had books about rainbow parties either when I was a kid. All the girls look like whores and all the boys look like punks. There I sit, on my bench with my giant pretzel, watching the freak show pass in front of me. I mutter under my breath about back in my day…
Oh no! I AM old.

Heh, you think it’s bad now, just wait until you hit the 40s and WunderKind is a blossoming teenager…
Don’t remind me. Each day that passes makes me think harder about home schooling. Or at least keeping them locked in a box until they are 30.
As for FM radio, I hope it tanks, the whole thing. I hope satellite radio puts it out of business and forces me to start paying for satellite service. Did you know there is music out there that is not top forty, and actually worth listening to? Here are some recommendations: Tony Rice, Robert Earl Keen, Chris Isaak, Kevin Kinney, Rhonda Vincent, Alicia Nugent, and my most recent discovery–Jack Johnson.
I’ve been looking for a Presbyterian Nunnery. Haven’t found one yet…
