Man, we sure had a good time. Crabbing was a success as you can see in the picture. My Uncle took me to the eastern shore of Maryland to do some crabbing in the Bay. Going over the Bay Bridge was pretty cool, except for the fact that I am terrified of heights. I just looked straight ahead and did not look over the edge. We caught a bunch of crabs, about 3 bushels full, but most were too small and we had to toss them back. We ended up with our regulation bushel of crabs. We had a great feast Thursday night on our hard won catches.
Then Friday happened……..
Ok, so Friday was THE DAY FROM HELL! We left out around 8 am for home (820 miles). I knew that given the kids ages, we were going to have to stop for the night but I was not prepared for the day of hell that awaited us.
Our first mistake was leaving on a holiday weekend. Duh! As I was stuck in traffic trying to get out of Northern Virginia, it finally dawned on me, Monday is the Fourth of July! I am a little slow.
Speaking of slow…that is what happened to traffic south of Richmond. In fact, we were in a 7 mile backup. We managed to go 5 miles in 30 minutes. Nice, real nice. It was about that time that our portable TV died. So now we have three kids 5 years and under with nothing to amuse themselves with. We broke through that mess and finally got close to Charlotte, NC. That was when we hit another back up and WunderKid3 lost it. To top it off, it started to rain. We called the family back home to get some prayer action and we headed into the storm.
The Lord answered our prayers that day! The kids all fell asleep and traffic broke up a bit. Then the bad part of the storm hit. I was commenting to WunderWife that the rain looked like it was swirling and that there was a lot of debris on the road. We both had the same thought: Tornado! Luckily we made out of what ever that was unscathed and finally pulled into a Holiday Inn Express in Greenville, SC around 8 pm. We had been in the car for 12 hours, but had only driven the distance one would normally drive in 9 hours!
Everyone slept like a rock last night. This could be due to exhaustion or the little dose of Benadryl that WunderWife slipped to each kid. Either way we woke up refreshed and ready to go. The first part of the trip went off without a hitch. The kids slept for 2 hours and then we finally made it south of Atlanta on our way to WunderTown. That was when WunderKid2 started in with a bad case of diarrhea. We stopped about 4 times in 30 miles to change him. It was bad, bad, bad….It was around this time that we almost lost our minds, but then we saw signs telling us we had made it home!
As I type everyone is down for a well deserved nap in their own beds. Thank goodness I do not have to go back to work until Tuesday. I need a few days to recover.
It was great to see everyone and my Aunt and Uncle (no kids of their own) are saints for putting us up and for putting up with us! Thanks guys.
I had a bunch of time to think about things. I will be writing them down in the next day or two. I promise this is going to be the only post about the family! Don’t worry; I will not make you watch the slide show!
