Paul over at The New Editor gives us a glimpse into the depth of depravity that is at the heart of the Blame America First crowd. Boston Globe writer James Carroll says that our WWII Pacific veterans are not heroes. I am sure he will say he was taken out of context, but here is what he said:
Even as the valor of what they did on one beachhead after another is properly honored, the American fighters of the Pacific War were not heroes. The desperation of island combat included exchanged barbarities of which no one would willingly speak for a generation. On the American side, there were foul racism, vengeful refusals to take prisoners, a generalized brutality that extended to a savage air war.
The only word that comes to mind that I can actually print is Bastard! Who the hell does this guy think he is?
Wow. It is absolutely incredible that a reputable newspaper would print such trash.
But just like the poster at Wizbang said:
But don’t you dare question Mr. Carroll’s patriotism. He loves this country.
No, one not dare question his patriotism, but it is ok to trash the men who paid in blood to save the world from the bloodlust that was the Japanese Empire.

My Grandfather was in the Navy, a Seabee, in the South Pacfic during WW2. SO, since he has passed away and since I know him so well, I feel justified in asking the question that my grandfather would surely ask him “What do You know about it Mr. Carrol? and, Just what makes you think you know what a hero is when you haven’t done anyhing for this country?”
I know that is what he would do because I remember seeing him rip a college student one day when he was protesting on the University Quad during the first gulf war. He mad that guy cry. It was greatness. So from my point of view, Mr. Carrol has a right to his opinion and I have a right to tell him to blow it out his posterior mostly because my Grandfather and his pacfic theatre commrades fought and won as heroes.

I had many, many emotions after reading what Carroll wrote and after I wrote my post. I am reminded of a book I read. It is called Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley. It is about the men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima. James Bradley’s father was John Bradley, one of the flag raisers. I is a wonderful book and shows how much of a struggle it was to just survive.
Mr. Carroll wrote that these men are not heroes because they did not take prisoners. Implying that our guys killed surrendering Japanese. True enough, but ever wonder why? James Bradley explains perfectly in a scene in which he is a collage student and he is talking to his dad about how the U.S. was partially to blame for Japans aggression. He laid out the usual Post Modern crap about economic boycotts, steel, fuel, oil etc. At some point his father could stand it no more and burst out that (I could not find the book this AM so I am going on memory) the Japanese sons of bitches had cut off his friends balls and stuffed them down his throat.
Stunned silence.
He was referring to his best buddy who went to the rear for some supplies and was never seen alive again. Apparently John Bradley and others stumbled across his body in a cave. He had been tortured for days and had his genitals cut off and stuffed down his throat.
From what I have read, this was common practice for the Japanese army. If that is how they treated our boys, then I do not blame our guys for not taking prisoners.
