UPDATE: Here is a great eye witness account of the shooting. London police – not the pansies you think they are!
“He half-tripped, was half-pushed to the floor,†Whitby said. “One of the police officers was holding a black automatic pistol in his left hand. They held it down to him and unloaded five shots into him. I saw it. He’s dead, five shots, he’s dead.”
As is being discussed in the comments, you can not play games with these people. If that guy had a bomb, the only way to absolutely protect the public, the job of our police mind you, was to shoot the guy dead. If he was innocent, he should not have run. Go London Cops!
UPDATE: The audio is finally up, so I have edited my post to include the actual quotes.
On the way into work today I was once again listening to NPR’s Morning Edition. They were talking about the suspect who was pursued and shot by London police today. From listening to the news reports and seeing the TV news you can tell that the talking heads are aghast that the police would shoot a man, when to them he was just running away.
The best exchange was between NPR’s Renée Montagne and some AP correspondent living in London. The NPR person asked what the AP’s take on the shooting was. The AP reporter said that witness accounts vary but that it appears that police chased a suspect into a subway station and at some point shot and killed him at close range. The AP reporter used the word “pumped” to describe that police “pumped him with as many as 5 shots”. The horror! Then the NPR person said the dumbest thing I have ever heard (around the 1:40 mark on the recording). She said something about the British police historically being unarmed and:
It sounds like they’re working aggressively to protect the city. Uh, possibly in this case, as an example
You have to listen to the recording to get the full sense that she is totally baffled by the police aggressively protecting the city.THE HELL YOU SAY! After all, police can’t go around shooting people just because they run. Here is where the MSM and the Left lose the war on terror. The old rules no longer apply.
Here is the scene. A person who appears to be of Middle Eastern decent is wearing a heavy coat, in the summer. Plain clothes officers approach him and he runs. Now the police are on heightened alert because suicide bombers killed 56 people two weeks ago and just yesterday a bunch of bombs thankfully did not go off as planned. What do you expect your police to do? TO.SERVE.AND.PROTECT. Here this suspect matches all the descriptions of suicide bombers and he is running TOWARDS a subway station. When that man entered the station, the police had just seconds to act before the suspect potentially detonated a bomb, killing many. What to do? Oh what to do? Shoot his ass dead. You don’t want to wound him, as he would then push the button and the bomb would go off. No, you unload your freaking clip. Make sure the son of a bitch does not move. Now to the Left and the MSM that is excessive, but that is how our enemy plays the game. They do not mind using excessive force against TOTALLY innocent people. So, the police need to use the same tactics.
If this guy was innocent, then he is a prime candidate for a Darwin Award. I mean, come on, you are Middle Eastern in a country that just suffered a string of terrorist attacks perpetrated by men of Middle Eastern descent and you run TOWARDS a subway? If he was innocent then all I have to say is: You sir, are an idiot!
Just watch as the days unfold. The MSM and the Left here and over there will be wringing their hands about the excessive use of force. They will say things like using excessive force makes us no better than the terrorists. BULL SH*T! We have to protect our people. If that means an innocent person is gunned down for making stupid decisions, then oh well. It is better that the police make that mistake rather than the mistake of being too cautious and an entire train is turned into a crater.
Once NPR posts today’s show, I will update this post to get the names correct and to give the exact quotes.

What’s the world coming to, when bobbies have GUNZ and then use them? Hell in a hand basket my friend. I hope for the cops’ sake, he was wired for sound. Otherwise, they are gonna loose their peabrains over there, when this could be a deterrent. Like “Hey! Who knew bobbies shoot, cause they sure didn’t when we started this!! Be damned if I’M, goin’ in next!”

Good post – quite right. If there was nothing under that coat, then it was “suicide by police.”
You deserve Ace’s “HE’S ON F’N FIRE” for this post. I was jubilant when I heard the news this morning. Take that you terrorist bastards! Seems the British police do have spines after all. GOOD FOR THEM. Churchill would be proud!
If the runner wasn’t a bomber, then suicide by police it is. If he was a bomber then lives were saved possibly by the dozens. We’re beyond the days of taking chances.
Man oh man. I have never been so proud of the British police. Just imagine if that happened here. Oh man, the streets would be full of protestors. I wonder if Al Sharpton would come to the aid of Arab men? It would get more media attention.
Sometimes the police have to make those split second decisions. If they are right, they are heroes, if they are wrong they are crucified in the press. They did not and do not have the luxury of sitting back with all the facts and figuring out how they “should” have done things.
This is a war. In war you have to shoot first and ask questions later. If not, then people die. To lead in war you have to use the best information that you have on hand, formulate a plan and then attack. If you sit around waiting for all your information to be verified before acting, you and your command will be over run. Plain and simple.
Can’t you just imagine someone using a little hand pump to inject shots into someone?
Excessive force is not relevent when the individual is thought to be a terrorist and is on a terrorist watch list! Wasn’t this true of the dude that was shot? I find it rather odd that Saddam is getting a trial and is not already dead! He should be having his trial before God in the after life!
I have warned you about listening to NPR…
It has been reported that this guy had left a house that had been under surveilance by British authorities. He was followed by the armed cops after leaving in an oversized coat. London can be chilly even in the summer but he stood out like a sore thumb. If they had not acted and let him set off a bomb the outrage would be more then the inevitable cries of excessive force and brutality.
[...] BTW, his post goes along nicely with my post on the same topic. [...]
