I have only one small comment to make about Eugene Robinson’s op-ed in today’s Washington Post. (Yes I read it too often). His op-ed is about the betrayal that the Israeli settlers in Gaza must feel toward their government. I guess he has some interesting points, but I need to correct him, or his editor should have corrected this piece of fiction:
I’m pleased that the Palestinians are joyously reclaiming land that was taken from them in 1967, and I hope this is a step toward the viable Palestinian state they deserve.
Now come on Mr. Robinson, have you forgotten history so soon? If you will recall, there NEVER were Palestinians until AFTER Israel was created. AND the Gaza strip was owned/occupied/whatever by Egypt and the West Bank by Jordan and Syria. Those three countries encircled and called for the outright destruction of Israel and blockaded Israel. Israel had to attack to defend itself. The fact that Israel kicked all three countries asses can not be overstated enough. So, if you want to characterize Gaza as being “taken” from the Palestinians, you really need to give the credit to Egypt. After all, if Nasser had not said things such as:
Israel and the imperialism around us, which confront us, are two separate things. There have been attempts to separate them, in order to break up the problems and present them in an imaginary light as if the problem of Israel is the problem of the refugees, by the solution of which the problem of Palestine will also be solved and no residue of the problem will remain. The danger of Israel lies in the very existence of Israel as it is in the present and in what she represents.
And
…the full restoration of the rights of the Palestinian people. In other words, we aim at the destruction of the state of Israel. The immediate aim: perfection of Arab military might. The national aim: the eradication of Israel.
Then maybe Israel would not have had to attack.
But I am sure he was just being misunderstood. Israel defended itself and by beating the living s**t out of its enemies, came into possession of Gaza. That is how your piece should have been written.
