Wizbang has a link for the latest GOP presidential straw poll. Go see what you think.
What hit me the hardest is how little I know about the candidates. Some have name recognition, but only a few do I know anything about their policies. The following have the name recognition, but I only really know about McCain:
John McCain
George Pataki
Mitt Romney
Rudy Giuliani
The rest I have sort of heard of but have no idea about where they stand on issues. Well except for Newt, but we all know he has as much chance as a snowball in hell.
It is kind of scary that I know so little about the GOP potential presidential candidates.
Lets hope we have some good blog content come late 2007 and early 2008.

That’s a problem… These had better not be the only Republicans with name recognition, because they are all ‘big-tent’ types, weaker even than W on spending (as governor of New York, Pataki in particular has been lousy); not one of them is pro-life, either, which will alienate good parts of the base. Guiliani is probably best out of this batch, but there isn’t a principled conservative in the bunch.
Yeah, I guess I was feeling the same way around 1998 too though. I remember thinking, “Great Gore will be President because the Republicans have no one to field”. But then came W.
I hope a strong leader will emerge soon for the GOP. My guess a governor, but like you said, Pataki is terrible. Are there any others out there worth a darn. Besides Jeb?
The Republicans seem to have lost their way over the past 4 years. I guess being in power does that. I say bring back the good parts of the Contract With America. Stand for strong national defense, engagement with the world, fiscal restraint, pro-life and pro-business. They would win in a landslide.
Ah, but Republicans are much better than Dems about voting party line. Once someone makes it through the primary, we’ll pull together. As long as there’s not another Perot-style independent (and I don’t see one on the horizon — Roberts maybe?).
I think most conservatives realize that even a weak Republican is better than a “moderate” liberal.
Possibly, but I am not optimistic. But like I said, I was not optimistic in 1998 either.
There is still a lot of time and there is always hope that someone with some balls will step up.
If the Dems try to run a Kuncinich or Howlin’ Howie again, it bodes well for the GOP, especially against a known no-nonsense fellow like Rudy. But what if they pull themselves together and run “Give ‘em” Zell Miller? There’s a reason why Lady MacBeth has been making so many pro-military noises the past year or so. She’s trying the old true-blue Kennedy run to the White House: young senator as on-the-rise new voice in the tired arena of politics. Sure, it only worked that one time, but there’s nothing like a clear plan.
She has the advantage of running in ‘06 and then just keeping it rolling for ‘08. In reality, that’s what the modern Left does best anyway - perpetual campaign. (They look great until they actually have to govern!) Hopefully that will backfire with the larger population, who get so sick of hearing it for months on end that they may tune her out. 2007 is still a whiles away, time for a good national candidate to pop up. If only W hadn’t shivved Pat Toomey, he might have been a guy to look for.
Best analogy ever!
As my father in law (a Florida resident) says, we got the wrong Bush in office. Jeb should run. We could have a Bush dynasty…I said a DYNASTY! The democrats and MSM would just love that. I know I would.
