Update: Watching the news last night and this morning. The MSM has been tossing softball questions at Jesse Jackson trying, with all their might to get him to say that the reason so many African Americans have been affected by this is because local, state and Federal agencies are racists. I can not believe the sort of race baiting I am seeing. The forcefulness and relentlessness of the questions show that the MSM needs a new angle for their story. They are salivating at the prospect of being able to label Bush a racist. It seems people have forgotten that the government of New Orleans is overwhelmingly African American. The Mayor is black. Almost all of the local and state elected representatives are Democrats.

To his ?credit? Jackson has so far not come out and said that the rescue effort is racist. But he has also not come out and said categorically that those types of questions are ridiculous. He would go a long way towards improving his image if he stood up on national TV and said that it is a tragedy, but that the idea that race had anything to do with the clean up and rescue is absurd and that people making such claims are doing more harm than good. But I am sure that I do not need to hold my breath on that one. There is always hope though.

Update: Well apparently some jackass named Kanye West (some rap singer/producer of questionable talent) said on national TV during the Red Cross telethon thing that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” Because we ALL know that Bush sat there watching the disaster unfold and then he and Karl high fived each other saying “That will teach those people”. Come on people, is that the best you can do as far as conspiracy theories? Ah, but from Michelle Malkin we find out that:

West may be Time’s “smartest man in pop music,” but he also happens to be a tinfoil-hat conspiracist who raps about how the government invented the AIDS virus and a petulant sore loser who delivered a tirade at the American Music Awards when he didn’t get a trophy.

NBC can’t say it wasn’t forewarned.

At least it looks like NBC, the Red Cross and near about everyone else is backing away from the guy and are claiming he diverted from his script.

People who spew this sort of thing hurt the cause more than they realize. Right or wrong blacks do not trust whites and whites do not trust blacks in this country. I would have thought we could have moved past that, on both sides, but I guess not. Some on either side are enjoying the whole sinking of New Orleans because it gives them more ammo in their war. For some it is further proof of white America’s indifference towards black people while for others they see vindication in their racists views when they see black looters. They are both wrong.

Black members of Congress expressed anger Friday at what they said was a slow federal response to Hurricane Katrina.

“It looks dysfunctional to me right now,” said Rep. Diane Watson, D-California.

She and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus, along with members of the Black Leadership Forum, National Conference of State Legislators, National Urban League and the NAACP, held a news conference and charged that the response was slow because those most affected are poor.

Many also are black, but the lawmakers held off on charging racism.

“The issue is not about race right now,” said Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio. “There will be another time to have issues about color.” [well thank God for that!]

I swear that I will fly into an unbelievable fit of rage the first time I hear that Evil Republicans (i.e. Bush) are dragging their feet on New Orleans because, well you know, a lot of black people live there.

New Orleans happens to be majority African American. Given the national statistics on poverty and what not, a disproportionate number of the African American community happens to be at or below the poverty line.

That is a fact.

It is also a fact that the city is below freaking sea level.

It is also a fact that the city is on the coast and is prone to hurricanes.

It is also a fact that Katrina was a big ass hurricane.

Given that the majority of those who stayed behind were people who could not afford to leave or did not have transportation also happen to be African American, the vast majority of the suffering that is being endured is being suffered by African Americans.

It is not due to a Neo-con agenda to wipe out black people. It is not because Bush and the southern states are racists. It is due to the FACT that there happens to be a large percentage of African Americans living in the city.

See my previous post on why I think the Federal government is doing about as good as can be expected.

I promise I will go off on the first person who raises the possibility that race has anything to do with this. Anyone who insists on such an idiotic train of thought is asking for a verbal beat down. So help me…

That is the last thing we need now.

    Ok think about this. Yes, President Bush was in New York after the tragedy of 9-11. Yes, he was all about kickin some terrorist ass. But what do you expect here, people in New Orleans are killing each other over bags of ice. That is no place for the President to be walkin around. And he shouldn’t be as upset as with 9-11, that was an attack on this country, this was a natural disaster, you want him to go chase the big bad clouds? (yes rabbit, I’m calling you a complete fucking idiot.) And for the record I think Kanye West should be arrested as an enemy of the state for slander against the President. If he ever gets out, he should not be allowed to have another album, video, or any piece of music produced. Celebrities are role models for young people. Do we really want to teach them not to trust the President of the United States? And how pathetic is it, when you use a disaster relief telethon to try to tell everyone that you think the president is a racist?

    This is not only about race, but also about oil….This tragedy has caused oil prices to sky rocket..oil that was purchased at a low rate is now being sold at a stupidly high rate. The longer that area of the U.S. is in the state it’s in, the longer all of the oil families of America, the ones who run the country, can charge these high rates for oil.

    The delay was not ONLY a race thing (although race did play a factor in the delayed response). However it is not that simple. One no one would have thought so much devastation could have happened in big bad America. Yes they analysed and predicted the levies would break but that was not close as seeing the real thing. The response was delayed because people were temporarily stunned or mystified at the extent of damage. It is human nature to hesitate when faced with a difficulty. Even our most courageous persons are not invincible to fear.

    If the people were mainly white and poor the response would have been more or less the same. The poor and needy are the ones who suffer the most.

    Kanye West was dead wrong. Every time i view that video it gets funnier and funnier as i watch Meyers and Tucker’s reactions. He does not know George Bush so he is not the best judge of the man’s character. It was very irresponsible of him because it was not the time or place to say what u felt at that moment. It was about the red cross and the victims NOT his feelings about BUSH.

    When will some people be professional. And those who are lashing out and calling Kanye names are no better than him.
