Update: Michelle Malkin has a wonderful post up about never forgetting. I like the first part. She taunts the MSM with:
Go check it out and ask yourself why the MSM wants to see bodies of the dead in New Orleans, yet refuses to replay the jumpers from the twin towers and refuses to replay the destruction of the twin towers. I think you already know the answer and it should disgust you.
Original Post Begins Here:
I cannot believe it has been 4 years already. I am sure everyone remembers where they were on that fateful day. More than that, I remember how I was as a person, a husband, a father.
Four years is a long time. During that time we have had two more children and are in the process of having another one. We moved into our first home. My wife and I have worked through a lot of baggage from the first 5 years of our marriage. In short, I have changed more than any of you guys can imagine in the 4 years since 9/11.
Regular readers of this blog no doubt understand that I am a die-hard supporter of the war on terror. There have been some missteps and I feel that Bush has not used the “Bully Pulpit” enough to keep support high for the war. The war did not begin on 9/11 but that was when the entire country finally woke up to the war that had been waged on the U.S. since the early 1970’s.
Where to go from here? I do not know. I DO believe that even IF all the reasons for going into Iraq were wrong, and I do not believe that for a second, that at least we are killing terrorists. Oh sure, without Iraq, we would be killing them one and two at a time as clandestine units hunt down cells. But with Iraq they are coming to us and we are able to kill them by the score. Regardless of what the Democrats say, EVERY SINGLE TERRORIST WE KILL MAKES US SAFER AT HOME. Period.
We have much to do to stabilize Iraq. I believe in the Iraqi people, just like I believe in the Afghan people. They can do this. They just have to say enough is enough and end the fighting. We also have a ticking time bomb in Iran and North Korea. Both are different problems than Iraq and Afghanistan. We have to use different approaches to them. It is amazing at the ignorance of the Left to claim that since Bush invaded Iraq, why isn’t he invading North Korea and Iran. They just do not seem to get it. Each problem that raises it’s head has to be dealt with differently. While invasion was the correct course for Iraq and Afghanistan, it is not the correct course for Iran and North Korea.
I also think something more substantial needs to be done with Syria. They have been harboring and funneling fighters into Iraq since the invasion. They also help to keep them supplied. What action should be taken? I do not know, but something has to give.
So, in four years millions upon millions of people live in freedom where once they lived in bondage. Are things perfect? No. Have mistakes been made? Quite a few. Do we still have a long way to go? You betcha. Is there still violence and death? Unfortunately yes. The only way to triumph is to keep pressing forward. Falling back now will further embolden our enemy. Our retreats from Lebanon and from Somalia taught our enemy that. It may sound like Bush does not have a grasp on reality because he keeps saying stay the course, but what choice does he have. Right or wrong we are there and leaving will ensure future loss of American life here and abroad.
Here’s to the victims of 9/11. I will never forget. I just hope your fellow countrymen never forget as well.
