Rusty over at The Jawa Report along with Paul at Wizbang are reporting that busses were being used within 48 hours of Katrina to begin evacuating people.
Rusty wonders why they did not drive the few miles to the Super Dome, since by that time the MSM was reporting that Armageddon was taking place inside:
So, just to be clear, some time after 10:00 a.m., somebody had the brilliant idea of taking a bunch of unused parked busses and getting people out of Dodge on them. Yet, for some unknown reason, no one thinks to drive a couple of miles and start picking up people in desperate need and who’s plight is all over the airwaves? Brilliant.
Paul says:
Your count may vary, but I counted roughly 60 buses in the yard and presumably they filled the bus barns with buses to protect as many as possible. The 2 buildings could have held probably another 50 buses. But for the sake of argument let’s say both buildings were empty. 60 buses X 75 people per bus is 4500 people per load. (you could put 100 per bus, but I’ll be generous)
From the Superdome to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge is about an hour with no traffic. They could have moved 4500 people every 3 hours. (time to load and unload) Or in other words, they could have had the Dome empty by sundown the day after the storm.
So, once again we are back to where we started. New Orleans could have done a hell of a better job utilizing it’s fleet of busses. They were not used and as a result, most were lost to the flood waters. But, some busses were moving within 48 hours to help people. The legitimate question is why didn’t they use the busses BEFORE Katrina hit?
Rusty sums it up best:
After going back and forth with Paul, you know, I think he’s right. If someone thought to use these busses two days after the storm hit, then why did no one think to use them the day before the storm hit? And why were these busses not used to evacuate the people out of the Superdome?
So, in summation, Nagin is an idiot. That is all.
Yep, something we can all agree on. The man is an idiot who has BOUGHT a house in Dallas, TX and who just laid off 3,000 city workers. Way to go jackass.

ok. Katrina hit and wiped out the city. They started rebuilding. Rita came and wiped it out again. I dont think they get the message. Its pretty clear to me. STOP TRYING TO REBUILD.
Amen brother! You are preaching to the choir.
Page 13 of the city’s diaster plan clearly states that the buses will have to be used. Also, if everyone who could get out got out why were there so many cars flooded out in the streets after the storm? And if the DHH requires that nursing homes have a contract in place with someone to evacuate their patients were 70% of NO nursing homes not evacuated?? And why doesn’t the news media in LA report any of this or the fact that the president of the Red Cross has said that food and water and hygiene kits were there and ready to go into the superdome, the convention center, and the interstate where people were stranded but the governor’s staff refused to let them in saying that they were afraid that it would only attract more people. And by the way I am from LA and I say please don’t put anyone in LA in charge of the money.
