Continuing on the “I Hate Campaign Finance Laws Because They Are Completely At Odds With The First Amendment” meme, Rob over at Say Anything has a great post up today about this very same topic.
There has been talk in the past of the FEC regulating political activity on the internet. This regulation would include classifying blog postings favoring one candidate (or disfavoring another) as “campaign contributions†limited by a set monetary amount. Which would mean that the FEC would come up with a “value†for a politically-oriented blog post and would limit the number of those a blogger could make during an election cycle so that it does not exceed the maximum allowable contribution.
Doesn’t that sound like it’s just a little bit of an infringement on first amendment rights? Since when is the government allowed to limit what I say about political candidates in this country? Whether I’m making my statements on the sidewalk out in public or on the internet in the form of blog postings, why should I be limited? What purpose does it serve? Other than to shield those in power from the criticism of their most vocal constituents?
If you are not the slightest bit worried about all of this…. you need help.
Like I previously wrote, I am going to blog until you toss my sorry butt in jail. There is no way you can read the Constitution and come up with the idea that I cannot pay, with my own money, for a website where I write about issues and candidates that I feel are important.
Just try and stop me.

Funny that this has become a topic of interest. I’m currently working on a short story set in the near future in which the internet is govt regulated. That is not the thrust of the story, just a milieu detail.
Do tell. When are you going to start publishing these things? You know I will always put them up on my site. I’ve been wanting to flesh out my Guest Essay section of my site for some time now.
They will be published when they are bought. If I allow you to post them online I run the risk of not selling them. Way it works is online publishing = published. Paying markets usually won’t touch stuff if it is already published online. Once I sell one I’ll let you know, if it’s an online mag then you can link to it. Long story short, I don’t like writing for free when I can help it.
When blogs are outlawed, only outlaws will have blogs.
I want to see the day when the government is internet regulated and not the other way round. Dammit, the Constitution is supposed to be a limit on THEM, not US.
