Ace of Spades links to an article that should be getting a lot more attention than it is.
The men tried to smuggle from Syria 20 tons of chemicals for an attack in Jordan that would have killed 80,000 people. On Sunday, the prosecution urged the judge to consider the death penalty for the men behind the largest planned WMD attack in history.
The chemicals are believed to be VX nerve gas. There were 20 tons of the weapons and explosives captured coming into Jordan from Syria. Syria doesn’t make VX. Saddam Hussein’s Iraq did.
One of my pet theories since the war in Iraq began is that Saddam transferred all his WMD’s to Syria before the invasion. There have been reports of convoys of Iraqi trucks flooding the Syrian border before the war. I know that some of the upsurge in traffic was due to the coming war itself, but the added convoys and the fact that even today we have not been able to secure the Iraq-Syria border has always led me to believe that Syria is the key to finding Saddam’s lost WMD’s.
I know many will scoff at the idea. Why would Saddam want to give up his stash before an invasion where he could have used them? Why would Saddam trust the Syria regime? So many whys. But the important thing to remember is that EVERY SINGLE INTELLIGENCE AGENCY in the world KNEW Saddam had WMD’s. Hell, even the French, Germans and Russians admit as much. How could they ALL be wrong? Saddam had WMD’s. He used them against Iran and against his own people. He refused inspections. If he had complied and was shown to have no WMD’s, sanctions would have been lifted and he would be free to brutalize his country today.
Where did the WMD’s go?
Syria. The key is Syria.

Agreed. I’ve been saying this about Syria before the war even began. We made our intentions pretty well known. He had plenty of time to get the stuff out. Plus, since the weapons inspectors were visiting (even though they were only shown the $0.25 tour under the best of circumstances), he probably had routes going into Syria for some time. And we have long known about Syria’s ambivalence toward terrorism/ists. Plus, they or Iran are probably next on out list.
“Why would Saddam want to give up his stash before an invasion where he could have used them?”
A reminder: Gulf 1, he flew much of his Air Force to hated Iran rather than let the planes be destroyed or captured. He didn’t get them back…
