Iraqis To Pick New Government

Iraqis started the year with a historic transitional assembly election. They voted for a constitution in October. And on Thursday they will cap their tumultuous year when many are expected to vote for a full four-year parliament. As many as 10 million people are expected to go to the polls, despite the possibility of violence.

This will be the third election this year.

Its about time they started trying to put together a permanent government. Right now the few saddam loyalists that are still engaging marines and army personell are able to act freely as far as terroristic activity goes. Their able to do this because there is no real government or law enforcement in place. The quicker we can help them to establish their government the quicker we can start bringing our troops home. The thing that upsets me the most though isn’t the fact that we’re still taking casualties in the daily fire fights, but the fact that many civilians don’t understand that a military withdrawal at this point would cause us to lose more soldiers than they are hoping to save. (by the way, wunderkraut, you asked me to keep you updated on my leave date a few months ago. I’m going on March 21st. 97 days left.)
