Since I am on a “Bad news from Iran” run, let’s talk about some unpleasant things.

Earlier this year I wrote a post questioning how we would respond to a nuclear attack. It was a post in response to Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo’s thought that we should nuke Mecca if terrorists attack the U.S. with nuclear weapons. While not in favor of nuking Mecca, I did ask several questions that still need to be answered. I also linked to an essay I wrote on this subject.

I bring all this back up because of Iran and all the loony things going on in that country (see here, here and here).

The best defense is a good offence. In football I hate it when my team is ahead and plays “Prevent Defense” during the other team’s final drive. The “Prevent Defense” only does one thing: It prevents you from winning. The same policy should apply to Iran. We know they are actively trying to build nuclear weapons. Hell, they have told the world as much. We also know that their leaders, both secular and religious, have called for the destruction of Israel for years. Most recently, the Iranian President called for Israel to be wiped off the face of the earth and he denied the Holocaust ever happened. Those sneaky JOOOS!!!! Reports also are out that this President Crazy thinks he has been called to usher in Islam’s version of Armageddon. Which of course means lots and lots of blood and carnage. Just like the Christian version of Armageddon.

I wonder who Iran will slaughter to usher in this wonder time period? Do you think maybe Israel? Whatever gave you that idea?

My point exactly.

So, what do we do? The only, ONLY thing there is to do is some sort of military action coupled with covert operations to bring down the Mullahs.

Chances of that happening: 10%

If we continue on with the understanding that no military action will be taken by the U.S. PRIOR to a mushroom cloud over Israel, how do we respond?

This is not as easy as you would imagine.

Me? I would nuke Iran for about 30 days straight. I would send a few the first day, then who knows, a nuke here and nuke there until Iran ceases to be a country.

You may be thinking that WunderKraut is a blood thirsty baby killer for what I just wrote. You are wrong. It is the ONLY way to ensure future peace and stability in the world.

Why do you think the U.S. and the Soviets never nuked each other? If you think it was because of the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), you are only partly correct. The main reason is because Harry Truman had the balls to nuke Japan to end WWII. Stalin and the Soviets saw that and since they did not have the bomb, they became extremely scared that we would nuke them next. Once they got the bomb, MAD helped keep aggression in check but in the back of their minds they knew that the U.S. had the balls to use nukes. Against purely civilian targets. That’s hard core and it made an impression on the Soviets.

The same goes with a response to Iran nuking Israel. As I wrote in my “Nuke Mecca” post:

A terrible, overwhelming, over the top response is required for such an event. There is no room for restraint or tempered measures. No, you just lost a few million people. Time to make the other guy lose 50 to 60 million. Would that mean innocent men, women and children would be killed? Yes, but that is life. We would have just lost a few million of our own innocent men, women and children. If you do not respond forcefully enough, the rest of the world will see that you lack the courage to strike back. Making a future attack all the more likely.

The only thing different will be that we did not lose millions, but Israel did. Israel the ONLY free country in the entire Middle East. If we allow our ally to be nuked without an overwhelmingly destructive response, we will have proven to the world and our enemies that the U.S. is a paper tiger. That we lack the fortitude to do the dirty work when we have to.

Israel is nuked in 2 years. Just before the U.S. Presidential election. Republicans and Democrats will be in full partisan mode. Who will step up and lead? Will Bush have the ability power to launch an counter strike? Can you imagine what the Democrats will say?

That is why you have to bite the bullet now and take out Iran. But faulty intelligence/ hidden weapons in Syria means that the public by and large and the Democrats to a one do not trust President Bush. If Bush waits for a mushroom cloud, it will be too late. The genie will be out of the bottle.

Sometimes wars are required. I firmly believe the current war in Iraq was necessary for the Iraqi people and the greater good of a peaceful Middle East. The Left disagrees and sees all war as evil. Evil to be sure, but necessary. Look past your Bush Derangement Syndrome and see that the writing is already on the wall in regards to Iran and Israel. We can stop it. But only if we act now.

But…

We won’t.

Israel will be gone in a few years.

The world will be less safe.

I will have nightmares about my children’s future.

    Wunderkraut,

If Iran is likely to use nukes against Israel, why can’t (and why shouldn’t) Israel defend itself (take pre-emptive action)? Your argument makes sense only if Israel does not have the military resources to strike Iran…but you have not make a case for that position. Are you seriously arguing that Israel does not have a capable air force (and does not have nukes)??

I agree with your principles and priorities…up until the conclusion that the USA should act to defend a country that can quite well defend itself.

I see your point Clarence, I guess I should have clarified my position better.

Yes, Israel does have the military capability and does have nukes. But, they will not be able to mount a sustained air attack and may not be able to reach the furthest targets. Using nukes pre-emptively is out of the question for either side unless we knew without a doubt that Iran was about to launch.

As it stands, Israel would have logistical trouble in maintaining a sustained air attack. Think of the countries it would have to fly over. Jordan, Syria, possibly Turkey, definitely Iraq. I doubt ANY of those countries would grant fly over rights. Then there is the distance. With the Osirak attack in Iraq, the distance was limited and it was one facility. Iran has multiple hardened facilities and the distance is much greater.

If the US helped Israel or if we did the attacking ourselves, we could mount a sustained attack like in Desert Storm. But even then, we may not be able to hit all the targets and we may not inflict sufficient damage. It would be a tough mission.

That is why some sort of covert operation would be required along with a bombing campaign. It would be very risky no matter what.

So yeah, Israel could strike, but I do not think they could sustain the attack. Using nukes first would be an extremely tough call. I guess if Israel felt threatened enough, they could launch first. But man, that is one tough call.

    Nuking Iran

Iran is such a depressing topic for me I haven’t blogged about it much. They are months away from developing a bomb, their hardline lunatic leadership is quite forthright about their desire to wipe Israel off the map, and they…

    “Nuke Mecca”?

    Try Medina. Let Mecca stand.

The trouble with radical islam, islamists, islomofascists, the terrorists, whatever, is seperating the adherants of islam from followers of mohammid.
