Yeah, it’s been an odd day today. First a post about a greased up streaker getting tagged with a stun gun and then my site goes down due to DNS problems and now I know more than I ever cared to know about certain types of eating disorders.

Now suffer as I have:

While reading this Onion piece that Dave at Garfield Ridge linked to, I decided to look up the word “Xylophagia”, as it was used in the piece.

From the almighty and often times wrong Wikipedia:

Xylophagia is a condition involving the excessive consumption of wood.

Yeah, basically human termites. Odd, but then again, people with mental disorders tend to do odd things. Well, one thing led to another and I followed a few links off that page and stumbled upon this wonderful list:

Amylophagia (consumption of starch)
Coprophagia (consumption of excrement)
Geophagy (consumption of soil)
Hematophagy (ingestion of blood)
Hyalophagia (consumption of glass)
Pagophagia (pathological consumption of ice)
Self-cannibalism (rare condition where body parts may be consumed)
Trichophagia (consumption of hair or wool)
Urophagia (consumption of urine)
Xylophagia (consumption of wood)

Pretty freaky stuff, but the most intriguing was Self-Cannibalism

Again, from the Wiki:

A certain amount of self-cannibalism occurs unwittingly, as the body consumes dead cells from the tongue and cheeks.

My God! I am being eaten alive! Alive I tell you!!!! Ahh!! Save me!!!

Oh, wait, yeah that makes sense. But wait this is disturbing:

One disorder known to cause autocannibalism is Lesch-Nyhan syndrome which features “self-mutilating behaviors, characterized by lip and finger biting.” Sixty percent of Lesch-Nyhan sufferers have to have their teeth removed to prevent them from biting off their lips, cheeks, tongues, and other parts.

Let’s just say that I am now extremely comfortable with all my odd habits/ticks/quirks…

*shudder*

You may or may not believe in demon possession, but I do and reading through the hell that is Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome leads me to believe in it even more.
