As promised, here is my post about our Savannah trip.

We had a great time this past weekend. It has been a long time since WunderWife and I had some time alone. We are very appreciative of her brother and his wife for volunteering to watch the WunderKids for the weekend.

The first night, we stayed right on River Street at the River Street Inn. I cannot emphasize enough how nice the place was and what a joy it was to stay right on River Street

The hotel was once a cotton warehouse. The bottom two floors were built in 1813 from old ballast stones from the ships. In the 1830’s or so, the top three floors were added. In this picture you can see all the floors.

More pictures after the jump.

One of the nice parts about the Inn was the two hours of free wine and appetizers. Sure it was the cheaper wine, but it was free and the little bits of free food were, well…free. After a wine or two, we asked the bartender where we should eat that night. He cheerfully went through the various eating establishments until he mentioned one that sounded great. The place was called Vic’s and it was by reservation only. He asked if we wanted him to call for us. That was fun. We felt like we were living a bit above our pay grade. The reservations were for 8:30, so we had a few hours to kill.

What to do? Hit the tourist traps of course.

The windows with the metal balconies in that last picture were part of our hotel.

One of the cooler things we saw were the huge container ships that were headed out to sea. Here is one near sunset:

Where is Jack Bauer?

A little before the appointed time, we ended up at Vic’s.

Something smells good

We were a bit early, so we parked ourselves at the bar and had a drink. They had a piano player and singer in the back corner and the place was dimly lit. It was perfect.

Dinner was perfect. WunderWife had some fish dish with an awesome succotash. I ordered a thick center cut pork chop. It had an apple/pecan sauce on top and it was really flavorful. One of my sides was mashed sweet potato with a bit of maple syrup mixed in. Wonderful. But the best part was the blanched turnip greens with balsamic vinegar/brown sugar/apple wood bacon dressing. You had the crispness and bitterness of the greens mixed with the sweetness of the dressing. Superb! I also had a gin and tonic that sure could have used a lot more gin. I’m just sayin’.

I was going to take a picture of each meal I ate this weekend and then make a post about it, but WunderWife would not let me take a picture inside the restaurant. Geesh, she is always harshing my groove man. So, no picture of the dinner. After that, I gave up on the photo-a-meal plan.

After dinner, we staggered back down to River Street. We headed to a local bakery to get some lovely desserts for later.

There were quite a few street entertainers out that night. Our favorite was the blues duo. The old man really strutted his stuff.

Breakfast the next morning was eaten outside on River Street. Here is a view from our table.

This is the life

We ate fresh beignets and then I had a tasty seafood omelet while WunderWife stuck with the traditional Denver Omelet.

We met up with some friends of ours and their two boys. It was wonderful to see them. They had to move when the Merk plant closed here in town. We went to the train museum and wandered around town.

I love old buildings

I must say that I HATE modern architecture. I want all my buildings to look like anything from the late 1800’s to the 1930’s. Look at all the ridiculous detail. Beautiful!

Got cotton?

I love cemeteries!

Wherever we go, I have to stop and wander through the old cemetery. It is like crack to me. Once we stopped in the middle of nowhere Ohio because I saw an old cemetery on a hillside.

This particular cemetery was the old Colonial Cemetery. Old bones in there.

We had our friends snap a picture of the two of us. Look at how beautiful she is. Sorry guys, she is taken. I always remember that lightning does not strike twice. I better take care of her; the chances of a guy like me getting THAT lucky again are slim to none. You’re the best baby.

Lucky me!

Ok, enough with the sugary sweet stuff….

Saturday night we had to stay in town at a Holiday Inn because we made reservations too late for the River Street Inn. It was a bit of a let down after staying there. Also, I will have to tell you the story about what happened that night. I will post on that later.

Sunday we headed over to Tybee Island just so we could say we saw the ocean. We walked for about an hour. Man, I love the beach.

I’ll take the condo on the right thank you

We could have stayed the week. Next time I am getting us rooms at the River Street Inn for the entire time. If you ever get over/down/up to Savannah, check it out. It was worth every penny.

Last but not least, here is my attempt at being artsy…..

Hey Mike, Thanks for meeting up with us Saturday. We had a blast. And that artsy photo is actually quite good.
