I was flipping channels before dinner tonight when I stumbled on the beginning of Apollo 13.

I
Love
This
Movie

I have seen it scores of times, yet every time it’s on, I HAVE to watch it.

It makes me proud to be an American.

Hell, it makes me proud to be human.

The scene when they are being strapped into the command module, just before liftoff, gets me every time. It almost brings tears to my eyes. Tonight was no different. I actually felt the tears welling up…

Then the rocket clears the tower, the families, the looks on their faces…wow!

Those guys were and are heroes. They were tough as nails and braver than I can ever imagine being.

I watched it with Jen and our oldest, Nathan. I’m glad he got to see it. He needs to see that regardless of what school, the media or his friends tell him, there are real heroes out there and that he should be proud of his country.

I know how the movie ends, yet there I was…waiting on the edge of my seat…

Makes me want to hug my mom, bake an apple pie, salute the flag and sing “God Bless America”!

One of my favorite Tom Hanks movies. However “Private Ryan” may take the prize for me. My favorite scene of “Apollo 13″ was probably the time Lovell has to manually line up the ship for re-entry all on Lunar Module’s engine. Crazy stuff. Amazing they ever made it home. Of course I like to see the “Right Stuff” once a year as well.

Did you catch the mini-series on Discovery Channel called “When we left Earth”? Pretty good stuff. Didn’t just cover Mercury/Gemini/Apollo, but went on to include the Shuttle and Hubble.

As much as I would love for us to go back to the Moon. I really don’t think it will happen in my lifetime. What happened in the 60’s and 70’s was an amazing period. Everything in this country just lined up precisely. From the countries emotional, and financial commitment, to level of smart technical folks that all showed up all at once; at the right place at the right time. And of course the crusade against communism didn’t hurt. It’s like the Pyramids of Egypt, the level of commitment that took place at that time in history was never able to be replicated since. Heck, it took the Eiffel tower before anything man made was ever as tall as the Giza pyramids.

The 60’s were a confluence of so many aspects of America’s history, that it will be remembered for a very long time.

Yep I watched that mini-series. Very cool indeed.

Every time I look up in the sky at the moon, I’m still amazed we actually landed people on it….either that, or the sound stage in the Nevada desert was very realistic.

Where ya been lately? You haven’t commented in a while. Didn’t know if you guys had moved again or if life just got busy.

Apollo 13 is a great movie. GREAT. I’ve got it on VHS. And don’t kid yourself, men went to the moon.

“We now live in a world where man has walked on the moon.”

Or, as the Onion put it:

“HOLY $**T! MAN WALKS ON THE F@*%ING MOON!”
