Look, I know I’m not the best person in the world to be handing out advice on the English language…(see here), but I have to comment about a certain pet peeve of mine.

On the internet there are lots of times when we want to show emotion.

This is often accomplished by using emoticons: :-) or :-( .

Other times people show it by writing it out, usually in italics: *sigh* or *burp* or *grin*

When you want to emphasize something you make it bold: I do not want to go.

The same thing can be done with all caps and bold: I HATE shaving!

Then there’s the always present LOL’s: LOL, ROFLMAO, OMG, WTF, IYKWIMAITYD, etc.

On the above most of us can all agree on, but there is one instance where things go horribly wrong.

Say for instance I want to make a statement about being excited that my team won the big game. I would type something like this: Yay! We won!

What if I wanted to acknowledge something? I would type something like: Yeah, I know, he’s an idiot.

Notice that those are two different words: yay and yeah.

Here’s what the dictionary says:

I found this site which had the best explanation:

So go forth and use these two wonderful emotive words correctly.

Again, don’t get down about past misusage. Remember, this is coming from the guy who misused boarder for border throughout an entire post on immigration…

Man, I thought I could blog about nothing. But you are the MASTER! I bow to your superior skills.

You are correct to bow to me. Writing about nothing takes skill. Lots and lots of skill.

If you’ve been reading for the last 3 1/2 years you should know that by now…

I didn’t say I bow to you. I said I bow to your skills. A subtle, but important, difference.

But you are still the man.
