He was smaller than he seemed in the scope. Also, I thought he might be an 8-pointer…alas…he was only a 6-pointer.

Still, I’m happy I got a buck this year.

There is a really cool story to tell about my hunt today, but I don’t have time right now. When I get back I’ll tell you about it.

OK, I’ll have to show you the big buck picture again since you didn’t pay attention.

Yeah, that seems to happen to me all the time.

    he was only a 6-pointer

Dude, you really need to start counting by the manly and CORRECT western count, rather than the sissified “count all the bumps you can find” eastern count.

But I’m glad you got a buck instead of a girl, son ;)

so Ken, what would i call this deer according to the “correct” western way?

The hanging-out tongue is just freaky. Maybe one of those spammers has a salve or something to help the deer with that.

    Can’t tell for certain, but I suspect a forked-horn.

Western count is only the side with the largest number of points, and excludes eyegards and all the little bumps around the base. What I can see in the picture looks likes a fork on each side, plus an eyeguard on each side. That’s actually uncommon in blacktails for a forked horn to have eyeguards; I’ve never hunted muleys or whitetails, so I don’t know if it’s more common for them.

What I gather about Eastern count is that they tally up all the points on both sides, then add in the eyeguards and all the little bumps around the base and near the eyeguards, and perhaps any stray hairs sticking to the horns ;)

    We call “eyegaurds” brow tines.

No we don’t count every bump on the rack. If a tine is 1″ or longer, it counts. So he had two tines and a brow tine on each side. That makes him a 6 pointer. :-P

Nightfly, I love the tongue. It gives hime character! Yeah, the spammers have hit this post hard…not sure why.
