My brother-in-law and his wife made a trip to Atlanta to get her Mac fixed. We decided to tag along.

The kids had never been to Stone Mountain before so we figured we would stop there, but first we stopped in Columbus, GA to see my Dad at the new National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning.

Dad works there on the weekends and he gave us a tour of the first section of the museum called “The Last 100 Yards”. This section tells the story of the American infantryman from the Revolution through the current conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each war is marked by a scene from one important battle. It was amazing to hear him describe the scenes and how the American infantryman has evolved over the history of our great country. After this section we toured around the rest of the museum. If you are in Columbus, go check it out.

Then it was off to Stone Mountain!

We had a smooth trip up there and had a great time taking in the sites. If you’ve never been to Stone Mountain, just imagine a huge granite boulder sticking up out of earth…nothing else around it. No other “mountains”, just a huge granite boulder. If the kids were older and if it wasn’t the middle of summer, we would have hiked up the mountain. It is a hike along the west ridge the mountain. I did it years ago when I was younger and thinner. It can be fairly tough at times but it is a lot of fun.

The trip home went very well. We got home just before midnight and went to put the kids to bed. That is when things went wrong. Madi started throwing up. About an hour later Charlie started. By morning I was sick with the same thing, but times two…if you catch my drift….

Anyway, Madi recovered by morning, but Charlie and I stayed in the back bedroom in bed all day. Jen banished us from the rest of the family until we could get to feeling better. By Sunday evening, we were both feeling good enough to go up front and play some Wii.

To make things even better, I woke up Monday morning with what appears to be a sinus infection. I ran a fever all day and collapsed into bed only to wake up in a pool of sweat once my fever had broken. I spent all day today sweating as I ran and broke small fevers. But don’t you worry yourself about me, I have my friend Nyquil ready and waiting.

My brother married an ATL girl, and they bought their first home in Stone Mtn. The first time we went to see them we went to the laser show at the mountain.

We sat on boulders on the ground (your pictures show it much more developed than when I was there 23 years ago) and some kid called me “Ma’am.” (I was 20.) (And appalled.)

ANYWAY. . . at the end of the show, the lasers outlined the figures, gave them legs, and to the strains of “Dixie,” they rode away. It kinda moved this lil’ Yankee girl.
